COMPUTERIZATION

The computerization of the Delhi Public Library activities initiated in 1995 by installing computers and accomplished by the UNESCO’s CDS/ISIS software package, which enable us to create a text database. From the 1997 onwards the D.B.Act.Division has started loading data in regard to books received under the Act, About 52,681 records in English and 38,180 in Hindi were created in CDS/ISIS till 31st March 2009 and 2,33,304 Hindi English and other language recods created in Koha ILMS Database till 12th January 2012. The Delhi Public Library has decided to deploy and implement Koha open source integrated library management software (ILMS) to expedite automation of in-house activities, this was carried out by the DPL own personnel with the guidance of information and library experts. The implementation was started from April 2007. In the 1st phase of implementation, one server was installed in the Central library. Book Purchase & Processing Division, D.B.Act.Division, Janak Puri and Vinoba Puri Branch has been fully computerized. The other activities such as retro-conversion are under process.

ONLINE PUBLIC ACCESS CATALOG (OPAC)

The implementation of Koha open source software permit bibliographical information of books and publications currently received under the Act and purchased from 2008 is available online. The bibliographical data can be downloaded free from our own library website http://delhipubliclibrary.in or DPL OPAC. Users from across the world and nearly 73,467 DPL members (As on 31.3.2011) can now access the most current catalogue of Delhi Public Library system.

PUBLIC INTERNET ACCESS SERVICE

DPL has started the public internet access service in 8 libraries with 5-10 workstations in Sarojini Nagar, Central library (S.P.Mukherjee Marg), Patel Nagar, Karol Bagh, Shahdara, Janak Puri, Narela and R.K.Puram, Sector-8 Library. Now it is upgraded to 20 workstations each in Sarojini Nagar, Central library and 15 workstations in Patel Nagar library. As on 31st March 2011 a total 2,09,482 readers surfed the Internet.

CHILDREN SECTION

Set up revamped children’s sections in all the three libraries (Sarojini Nagar, Central library (S.P.Mukherjee Marg) and Patel Nagar Library). Children sections have been revamped in all the thee libraries by withdrawing all the old books and added new books. These sections have been colorfully decorated, with multi colors and furnished with new games/toys are one of the most pleasant rooms in the library and have been very well used. Wide publicity has been given through posters, pamphlets etc.

REVAMPED DVD Corner

Set up a fully computerized new DVD corner in four libraries Central Library, Sarojini Nagar, Patel Nagar, Karol Bagh, Shahdara, Narela, R.K.Puram, Sector-8 and Janak Puri.

FULLY COMPUTERISED LIBRARY

A fully computerized sub-branch library opened at Vinobha Puri and Janak Puri. Membership, issue/return and all the services are fully computerized. Membership, issue/return of DVD are computerized at Central Library, Sarojini Nagar, Patel Nagar, Karol Bagh, Shahdara, Narela and R.K.Puram, Sector-8.
